Is Silver City seeing an increase in the number of stolen motor vehicles?

The total number of motor vehicles stolen in the first 6 weeks of 2017 has been six, 5 motor vehicles and 1 trailer, see below for breakdown.
The total number stolen in the first 8 weeks of 2016 was 3.
There were a total of 19 stolen in 2016.

For a perspective lets look at some previous years that I have available:
2007 Total- 31; Total Arrests- 9
2008 Total- 27; Total Arrests- 6
2009 Total- 27; Total Arrests- 1
2010 Total- 27; Total Arrests- 5
2011 Total- 23 - Jan- 2, Feb- 1; Total Arrests- 3
2012 Total- 31 - Jan- 4, Feb- 2; Total Arrests- 6
2013 Total- 21
2014 Total- 17 - Jan- 1, Feb- 1
2015 Total- 11

- January 9, 2017, at about 6:30 am, two motorized scooters were stolen from the carport in the 2400 block of Cactus Street. One was a red and black 2007 Honda. The other was a bare metal stripped down scooter.
- January 29, 2017, at about 8:33 pm, A Honda Pilot was stolen from the 2600 block of Brianna Way. The vehicle was recovered in the area of La Capilla which is located on S. Cooper Street.

- February 3, 2017, at about 6:01 am, a blue 2004 Dodge Caravan was taken from the 600 block of W. 13th Street. The vehicle was recovered in Arenas Valley by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

- February 9, 2017, at about 11:26 am, a gray 1991 Ford F-150 truck with a utility bed was taken from the 1800 block of Alabama Street.
- February 14, 2017, early morning, Black 2011 Toyota Camry was stolen from the 1400 block of Virginia and recovered on Grant Street about an hour later.

To make the tools shown above obsolete people leave their vehicles running to warm up or to run into the store/postoffice. The PD is recommending that we do not leave our vehicles running to warm up nor when unattended.

The investigation is continuing into these thefts.
Anyone with information on these thefts or any other crimes can call the Silver City Police Department at 575-538-3723, ext. 1246. You can also call the dispatch center at 575-388-8840. The caller can remain anonymous.

Just found out today that several vehicles were BROKEN INTO, on North Grant and Santa Rita Streets and a thwarted attempt was made in the HMS parking lot. There is a camera there and police are going to observe the footage. The thief was at this yesterday afternoon...checking car doors to see if they were locked. So lock your car doors. The description was of a man in a black hoodie.
