Starting Monday February 13 the new recycle bins will begin to be delivered to every resident with a currant recycle bin on their curb on their respective recycle day. These huge 65 gallon, forest green bins will be lifted by the old, hand me down side loaders once used by the trash collectors who now have new trucks.
Every pound of viable recycled material brings us a 3 fold return:
1. Each pound is sold for above collection and delivery cost to the next level recyclers;
2. Every pound that is diverted from the landfill prolongs the life of the landfill and its obscene cost to close, move and open a new landfill, about $2 million;
3. Every pound of recycled material used for new products reduces the impact of mining, chemical and petroleum for virgin plastics and trees cut down for paper as well as reduced pollution of land, rivers and oceans.
Imbedded on the lid of each bin is a pictorial of what can and cannot be placed in the bin. Too much forbidden materially, especially dead animals can cause a whole compressed truckload to be dumped in the landfill thereby reducing our return on investment and overall benefits of the program as outlined above.
