A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that of 111 NFL players whose brains were studied, 110 of them had signs of CTE a chronic progressive brain injury mostly linked to football players and boxers which, in it's worst case causes violence.

The worst case in a young player was New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, 27, who committed suicide in prison after being convicted of murder. What would be interesting is a post-mortem study of OJ Simpson's brain. Remember that CTE is still undetectable in the living brain. This type of brain injury undoubtedly begins in the high school and other football league players.

Perhaps nobody really cares.

Women's golf team had a much better Fall campaign than the men's team. In the four tournaments played by the women they finished in the top half in two of the tournaments. The men's team didn't finish in the top half in any of their four tournaments.

Interestly the women's team is made up of players from the southwest US, two from NM.

The men's team has only 2 of 9 players from the US, 1 from NM.

I'm not against foreign students, they give a good experience to the students on Western's campus. But foreign students on athletic scholarships reduce the opportunity for US athletes to gain experience in college competition and reduce the quality of US athletes particularly in golf and tennis.

Western's athletic department should now see that recruiting a roster of foreign athletes is no guarantee of success.

Women's results:
Farmer's Ins Invitational 3rd of 12
Texann Women's Fall Classic 7th of 10
Skyhawk Regional 19th of 20
WNMU Fall Intercollegiate 6th of 17

Perhaps it's about time for WNMU start saving some money and scrapping the athletics program. There are other far more worthwhile programs that really could use the money to succeed - and I don't mean more money in Shepherd's pockets which are too full already.
