Jeremiah Garcia made the following statement at the last Regent’s meeting when speaking of Western New Mexico University, “you have one of the best outstanding nursing programs in New Mexico”.

I don’t know how Mr. Garcia reached his evaluation, but in fact the nursing program at Western is a program in crisis. The usual method of determining the effectiveness of a nursing program is to look at the percentage of graduates that pass the license test on the first try. Western had a pass rate in 2016 of 67.18%. 23 of the nursing schools in New Mexico had higher pass rates and only 3 had lower pass rates. Western’s nursing program is near the bottom in New Mexico.

A graduate of the Western nursing program cannot work as an RN until they pass the licensing test. So after the first taking of the test about one-third of Western’s graduates cannot work. According to the Board of Nursing the pass rate for those that take the test a second time is about 50%. So it may be some time before some graduates get to work as an RN if ever.

Only about 60% of those people admitted to the two year program finish in three years.

Mr. Garcia should be in front of the Board of Regents, but he should not be telling them how good the program is. He should be demanding that the program become at least average in New Mexico.

If any of the readers know Mr. Garcia please direct him to this post

It seems like many claims are being made about WNMU and it's various programs, but do the speakers fact check these laudations heaped upon the University? Do the Regents care about the truth or do they accept these hollow words of praise as reason enough to dole out our tax dollars in expected "bonuses" when promises are not met year after year?

There was one actual fact about Western that all the town’s people invited to comment on the President’s evaluation knew. That fact was: the President of Western’s first name is “Joe”.
