Great applause and some cheers broke out when Sanctuary Cities was cited as something communities, people of conscience, could do to fight back against the inhumane treatment of people here without papers, whether they sneaked across the border, had expired visas, or were seeking refugee status, all for mostly the same reasons that include economic wars, drug wars, political/religious wars and now wars against immigrants/refugees. Spurred on by groups like the ACLU and The Immigration Justice Network, communities across the US are wishing to resist the heavy handed tactics of the reborn white nationalist movement led by our own federal government.

Recently there has been an increased movement here in Silver City/Grant County with 3 community meetings on immigrant issues and smaller informal meetings between activists and Town and County officials with SCPD Chief and Detention Center Director being ask the 9 Questions from the ACLU. Soon the groups plan speak with the County Commission and Town Council asking them to take a formal public stand to not aid the Federal agents like ICE by declaring a Sanctuary City and County or as the national ACLU now suggests, "Freedom City/County". The ACLU suggestions and their 9 questions to ask officials can be found HERE.

Corroborated by Silver City Mayor Ladner at Thursday's Community Forum the Town has an unwritten and mostly unspoken policy of not asking nationalities, immigration status nor religion during traffic stops. According to those who have interviewed GCDC Admin Mike Carrillo the jail has the same policy and will not hold a prisoner for ICE without a warrant in hand. For many local activists this is not enough and will continue for now the movement to make the policy formal. For now the Town and County are resisting a formal declaration with the various players giving various reasons but the bottom line seems to be a fear of loosing federal funding as the Bully-in-Chief keeps threatening.

Thursday and Friday's classes were taught by Immigration Lawyers Allegra Love of the Santa Fe Dreamers Project and Horatio Moreno Campos from OLE in Albuquerque with Gracia Rivas, a Dreamer and student activist joining them at the Community Forum Thursday evening.

After discussing the sad condition of mothers and children, separated from their husbands and fathers, locked up in prisons Allegra Love stated that while she doesn't condone people crossing that invisible line in the sand called a border she felt that the punishment should more closely fit this minor crime as they flee oppression and war. Because of a palpable fear within the migrant community they tend to avoid public meetings so the meetings stressed the need for the community to reach out and help guide them through the proper channels to straighten out their predicament.

Groups like OLE, the Dreamers Project and The Immigration Justice Network among other offer legal counseling or can direct inquiries in the right direction.
