Approximately sixty area residents gathered at Dr. Arizaga’s meeting room this past Saturday afternoon to view a live streaming of an ACLU town hall launching their “People Power” initiative. The Silver City event, sponsored by the Southwestern Chapter of the ACLU of NM, was one of 2300 similar gatherings that took place simultaneously across the United States. Although final figures are not yet available, the ACLU expected that 200,000 people would view their town hall event, either in local gatherings or from their homes.

People Power is an effort by the ACLU to reach out to grassroots activists and other individuals concerned about the current political climate and the state of our civil liberties. As a first step, the ACLU presented their Freedom Cities campaign, a nine-point plan designed as a blueprint for local public officials to ensure that their law enforcement policies are humane and respectful of our constitutional rights, particularly when acting on behalf of Federal agencies in matters such as immigration.

For more information about People Power and the Freedom Cities campaign, go to http://peoplepower.org. For information and updates about local People Power efforts and other local ACLU activities, contact Robert Garrett, Southwestern Chapter President, at pabob@earthlink.net.
