In the last 5 hours of the 80 hour training of the new recruits the task was to enter the burning building, put out the fires and find and rescue any victims but unlike previous days this was a real fire in the "burn building" at the corner of 32nd and PA Rd. Next week these last 2 of six new recruits will be assigned to a crew and begin their 1 year probationary period, but wait, their training i still not over. While this got them on a crew they still need to become certified a level 1 firefighter, for this they will attend another similar 80 hour training in Socorro sometime during their 1 year probationary period and it still won't be over.

Courses in "rope rescue" and knot tying and studies to reach higher levels of EMT certifications is expected as well as studies to reach Level 2 Firefighter certification are expected of them and all the firefighters who wish to advance their careers.

During this 4th burn of the afternoon, the heat is more than intense, they find their victum and drag him like a 200 pound limp sack of potatoes out of the building; the radio crackles, "missing man, reenter, reenter" and the 2 plunge again into that intense that I feel standing 10 feet away from the this back door; then, "exercise over".

Much of the training is about safety and here a trainee learns about walking on the roof of a burning building. The long pike in his right hand has a hook on the upper end for pulling loose roofing to expose burning rafters and sub-roofing but the other end , the one pointing doen is used to vigorously pound the roof before each step to determine the integrity lest he steps on a week spot and ends up in the fire below.

Between each burn the crew gathers in the shade of the tree to discuss their experience and receive more instruction. The red just left of center is one of the 2 new trainees who have earned their blue shirt.
