By June the Silver City FD had lost 6 men, nearly a full shift of 7, and, for the good news, a woman for the first time in 17 years passed both the written and the famously notorious physical exam and got hired. By late July 5 more, men, had passed the tests and begun training. The most current 2 new hires started their 40 hour training a couple of days ago. Their day begins at 6:30 am with intense physical exercises and ends at 4 pm or later. Wednesday afternoon I caught up with them at Station 2 for hose training. The trainings are led by NM State Certified Trainer and Silver City Fire Marshall Milo Lambert with assistance from the crew of Engine 12 from station 1.

In the photo above the trainees, in full gear, learn how to stand to resist the kickback of the 100 psi water pressure that can knock them on their asses then whip them to death. Also with how to stand was how to hold the hose between the bicep and chest leaving their hands free to control the nozzle.

Image
Then they learned how to shuffle in unison forward and backward as one calls the cadence.

Image
Here they each leaned how to control the hose individually which by then nearly exhausted them and a break was called while the big gun was brought out for the larger hose. They had been using the 1.75 inch hose and now would set up the 2.5 inch hose.

Image
First, this nozzle, like the other 2 for the smaller hose, has a "Barrier Mist" setting that can be quickly switched on for firefighter protection in case of intense heat or an actual blowback of flames. This nozzle sits on the ground and has 2 short legs that imbed into the ground or even into concrete as shown here so that water can be sprayed straight or oscillating back and forth without a person manning it.

Image
Before automatic use the nozzle must be placed by a person and the hose must be placed as shown. The firefighter sits on the hose in a couple of different ways, the nozzle is turned on and before the legs imbed in the concrete the firefighter, nozzle and hose are pushed back a few inches. If the nozzle moves more than about 12 inches the nozzle automatically turns itself off before it thrashes on any bystander or machinery like an angry dragons' tail.

Image
After the demonstration a trainee gives it a try and is soon instructed to actually sit on the hose where it crosses over itself.

I'll be catching up with them again as they progress through this fascinating process.
