I know all of the major race candidates I will vote for, but not the sheriff race. Does anyone have opinions on the candidates running for Sheriff?

I would be happy to share what I know. Perhaps others will add their thoughts.
On the Democratic side we have 3 on the ballot:

Frank Gomez, is a current Sheriff's Sergeant and has been in the Dept for many years after careers in the military and then with the mine. I think I'm missing something. He has served several terms on the Cobre School Board, currently the Secretary. He favors Community Policing, adding a drug crime specialist, and citizens oversight of both the Sheriff's Office and the Detention Center.

Lonnie Sandoval is currently the Chief of Santa Clara Police after a career in the military and then with the State Police. He says he thinks the Sheriff's Office can use his management skills. I don't recall other statements of plans. He is known for improving the Santa Clara Dept.

Tovar (sorry for my senior moment on his first name). I only know that he retired from the Sheriff's Office in the recent past. I hope someone can fill in more details.

My personal preference is for Officer Gomez. He has been active in his community, in his Union, and attended some of our Democrat meetings over the years. As a native of our area, he has a clear understanding of our communities and population. He has worked and will work with our courts to ensure the best outcomes for the community and it's residents.

More opinions available by pm.

Recently I had a choking event in a local restaurant. Officer "Tovar" was right there to help.

I support Lonnie Sandoval. I have known him and his family for several years and have a lot of respect for Lonnie. I believe you can tell a lot about a person by how they have raised their kids. Three of his kids are in school here and are well-behaved and good students and athletes. I don't live in Santa Clara, where he is the chief of police, but from outward appearances crime is not as bad there as it used to be. I also just read that Lonnie offered to reduce his hours from 40 to 30 per week so that they could afford to hire another officer.

Thanks Terry,
I've heard the same from someone else. I just voted for him today.
