Silver City Territorial Charter Day: Mark your calendars on February 17th for a day of Wild West Fun!

Silver City is the only community still operating under their original charter, which predates New Mexican statehood. To celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Silver City Territorial Charter in February 1878, you are invited to join in Territorial Charter Day!

Throughout Grant County on Saturday, February 17th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, you can partake in activities to get into the spirit of ol’ Wild West Silver City. Current planned activities include: current and past local officials in period costume, a 5k Fun Run and Children’s run, Charter Day Deals at local stores, period actors and tours at Fort Bayard, live music, and volunteer and community service opportunities.

Current and past local officials in period costume will re-enact the signing of Silver City’s territorial charter at 2:00 pm at the Silver City Museum’s Annex building at 304 W. Broadway. Visitors are invited to dress in period costume. The Urban Challenge 5k Fun Run starts off at 9:00 am. Children’s Fun Run starts at 11 am. The entry fee is three cans of food to be donated to the Grant County Food Pantry. Registration starts at 8:00 am next to the Visitor Center but pre-registration done through the mail guarantees a tee-shirt. Contact the Main Street Project offices at 575-534-1700 about registering through the mail. Residents are encouraged to sign up for a day of service as specified in the Town Charter. Sign up table will be manned at the Visitor’s Center. Ft. Bayard Museum will be open for tours 9 am to 4 pm.

For more information on the most up to date activities and times, please visit the event Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SCTerritorialCharter/.

Also keep your eyes out for a special Territorial Charter collector’s edition of The Independent on February 15.

For more information, please contact the museum at (575) 538-5921, info@silvercitymuseum.org, or go to the museum's website. www.silvercitymuseum.org.
