The next item on the election calendar is on Tuesday, January 16, for Write-In Candidate filing day.

Though the Write-In candidate's name will not be listed on the ballot there will be a line to write a name on, If a name of a person is written on the line it will only be counted it that person has registered as a Write-In candidate.

This is a weird and peculiar policy. I doubt it would hold up in court. If a person who did not file to be a write-in candidate got more write-in votes than the official candidates it would be hard to argue that their votes should not be counted. Requiring write-in candidates to file defies the definition of a write-in candidate. On the other hand, if an unregistered write-in candidate got the most votes, who would know (other than the Town Clerk)? Fortunately this minor technical problem is unlikely to ever be an issue.

So far I've never heard of it being an issue but I agree when it comes to the Mayor race because it is a Town wide position and should not be subject to the conditions imposed on the districts. In order to to run for a district counselor position a person has to reside in that district but then again to qualify to be the mayor one has to reside within the Town limits so I'm not sure how else it can be dealt with.
