Does anyone know how to repair plaster walls?

It depends...

Spot repairs are very difficult to fix and make invisible. My experience is that the crack, or patch, must be fixed using some form of mesh reinforcement and then the entire wall skim coated with a new layer. If it is the standard sand texture, it can be fairly well matched using ordinary drywall mud with some sand mixed in, applied using a soft (orange) stucco sponge float.
