I am pretty fascinated by this....We are somewhat fix it up challenged, but we do have 2 hot water heaters to be salvaged...one still actually working and we would like to build this. We would be willing to pay you to help us do this...interested?

Hello. Yes, I would be happy to put one of these together for you. My rate for these is $30/hr plus materials. Depending on details of tapping into your existing plumbing, total cost will be approximately $1100.

Also, there is a workshop I will be co-facilitating with Jean Eisenhower and Greg Renfro of People's Design on Saturday 28 April 2012. We won't be building an entire unit during the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring old water heaters and we we will be instructing on the process of salvaging the steel pressure tanks from the old units. We will also discuss the rest of the process and show examples of other types of simple hot water heating systems as well. Cost of the workshop is $20. See this posting in the calendar of events.

Please feel free to call me to discuss further.

Asher Gelbart of Mimbres Valley knows how to do this. He also sells 750 gal. rainwater storage tanks. I do not have his contact info, but you should be able to find it by asking around. Good luck!

great job!
one can save even more by using the exterior sheet metal shroud around the old water heaters in place of the plywood, positioning the unit up against a south facing existing structure, slowing heat loss at night and providing a protected place for the plumbing to and from which on those very cold winter nights may freeze.
enjoy that solar hot h2o !

Please offer your solar water heater workshop, slated for Apr. 28, at another date also. Please! On such short notice, I've committed to other plans, but sure would like to attend! Thanks.

The solar water heater workshop will probably be rescheduled for early autumn, or earlier, depending on demand. Thanks!
