What Next?

Wound licking is over. The die has been cast and decades of hard work (for animals, for justice, for the poor, for the forests) is all gone. It will not return. It is hard to accept, but accept it we must. A golfer spelled it out for me; you have to play the ball where it lands, not where you want it to land.

It is no hyperbole; we have had a coup. It was an illegitimate assumption of power. It is not speculation that this election was undermined by Russian intervention, the FBI, and a media that failed to vet Trump. I don’t blame Bernie folks for not voting for reasons of conscience, or the folks who stayed at home and watched re-runs of Baywatch. I blame myself.

The problem is that we didn’t just lose the electoral vote, we lost the future. And I didn’t do enough to stop it.

I don’t care if you didn’t like Hillary; disliking her was meaningless self indulgence, especially considering our current situation. There are meaningful criticisms that can be leveled at the Democrat Party; many opportunities to reach out to the unemployed and distressed in many parts of America were not fulfilled. Democrats lost their base. The bottled up rage, racism, and hate that was weaponized by the Republican Party was the reason for the Democratic defeat;and with that defeat, we lost the security and stability of the world. The forgotten voter cast a grievance vote; a ‘screw you’ vote. In short..the Liberals blew it, but with the best of intentions. (Alan Wagman spoke with great clarity on this in an earlier post).

I have no intention to work with a third party; this is not the time for laboratory politics. There is always the cry after an election failure for ‘a new alternative’. Well, we have a new alternative: It’s Facism… no joke, real deal.

But there were some real victories for the Dems in the election:

Alicia K. Edwards over Henry Torres in District 3 and Harry Browne over Pecotte in District 5. Both contests votes were very, very close..too close. Rudolpho Martinez and Howie Morales rounded out the victories. Mary Hotvedt ran a good race; 5846 for Mary, 7099 for Rebecca Dowd.

But the loses in the Congressional race were staggering:
Mary Lee Soulesssss; 84,574
Pearce: 142,495

Wow. Mary Lee was a very flawed candidate in that she was the opposite of inspirational. We need that seat, and it is near impossible, but doable.

What I am going to do is go back to the Democratic Party meetings. I have a singular intent; I want to make New Mexico Bluer. It isn’t enough to assume that we will hold on to the majority in the the House and Senate here in NM; that might very easily slip away in the next cycle because of small turn-out. But here’s the thing; we are about to be hit by a juggernaut of ALEC bills, an angry Republican Governor who just wants to screw things up until the end of her term, and worst of all, a vengeful Trump who wants to gut New Mexico for the wall, the sanctuary cities, and the loss
we handed him. And we know from what we have seen, he is a hateful, vengeful man. And he is the President Elect of the United States.

This is what I am going to do. Working within the Dem party isn’t for everybody, but each and every one of us must do something.

We are the Resistance...and we need to get to work.
