We have composted our veggie kitchen scraps for many years using a three-pit system, but in recent years the fly problem seems to have worsened even though we do our best to cover the active pit with dirt. Since we live right in town with close neighbors and have been bothered ourselves with so many flies, I'd like to try a compost tumbler, but I'd like to hear of others' experiences first. Any suggestions on size for a kitchen serving two people who eat a LOT of vegetables, hence much green material? Good brands? Styles? What to avoid? Do we need to have two going at once? Thanks for any and all help. Sharon

Lee Valley Gardening Tools has a dual-batch rolling composter which I own and have been using for a 1-person household.

I don't have as much material to compost as a 2-person household like yours might generate--however, I've been very pleased with it. I believe it sells for about $110. Two separate, side-by-side compartments makes this piece of equipment wonderful in my opinion. You can fill one, and then while that is breaking down, you can use the other bin. It rolls easily, takes a couple of hours to assemble (or less), and takes up relatively little space. Turning it every day or so keeps things going. Some flies do gather around it, and when they do, I throw in another shovel-full of dirt. They also have a small green kitchen compost gathering bin which I have, and am very pleased with it.
