SILVER CITY — Solar cooks and the “solar curious” are invited to the First Annual “Summer Solstice Solar Cooking Celebration” in downtown Silver City - on Saturday, June 20, from 9 − 2.

Solar cooks are invited to bring their ovens, cook a meal, share skills, learn from others, and share our enjoyment of cooking with the sun - all in a relaxed, non-scheduled educational and celebratory event.

Those interested in learning about solar cooking are invited to come see the variety of home-built and manufactured ovens and see all the types of cooking that can be done with the sun, some of which might be baking bread and casseroles, boiling and steaming veggies, cooking grains, and even "sautéing"! The celebration is free and open to the public.

There will also be cookbooks to purchase and printed instructions on how to make your own solar oven - free with a $1 or more donation. All donations will go to a fund to give a free Sun Oven to a local Silver City/Grant County non-profit!

The outdoor Art Market is downtown, on Bullard Street between 7th and 8th Streets, across from the Farmers Market. The celebration will take place between 9 and 2.

Anyone who owns an oven and would like to cook are encouraged to call 575-534-0123 for more information - or visit http://homeandgardeninspiration.net/201 ... lebration/ - though registration is not required but will help with planning and will provide cooks some reminders of things to bring. Cooks should arrive between 8 and 9 to set up.

Solar cooking celebrations are becoming very common and popular around the world, especially on the Summer Solstice, when days are longest and the sun shines most directly through the atmosphere for the most intense solar gain of the year. Some people find that they can cook meal after meal, as many as five in a day, on the Summer Solstice.

The celebration is sponsored by the Silver City Art Market (silvercityartmarket.com) and Home and Garden Inspiration (http://homeandgardeninspiration.net/).
