The Silver City Farmers' Market is in full swing, with a variety of summer vegetables coming in from the local fields. Greens, squash, beans, melons, cukes and corn are just part of the mix, with some tomatoes coming in soon. Local fruits are arriving at the market as well. Growers have expressed how the season has been a bit "late" because of late cold weather in May, followed by some blistering heat. The recent monsoons, however, have pushed the growth of many crops, and the number of vendors at the Market reflects the bounty that is present this time of year. As usual, the Market vendors accept EBT and WIC and Senior checks. The Silver City Market hours are 8:30-12 every Saturday in Mainstreet Plaza, off of Bullard Street between 7th and 8th Streets, by the Big Ditch. The Market has recently formed as a non-profit, so that donors can make tax-deductible contributions. This, along with volunteer help, is crucial to keep the Market functioning as an important asset in the community.
On August 21, the Silver City Market will have the annual Salsa Contest. There will be 1st and 2nd place prizes for both the red and green categories, as well as a "Best in Show" grand prize, dinner for 2 at the local eatery The Curious Kumquat. Participants can submit their entries by 9:30, with judging at 10. Contestants are encouraged to use local ingredients wherever possible.
Stay tuned for new event to be held in September at the market! It's called the "Farm2Chef Challenge", and will sponsored by the Green Chamber of Commerce and the Community Health Council.
The Market has a new website where you can find out the latest news: http://silvercityfarmersmarket.blogspot.com/
In other Farmers' Market happenings, new markets have recently sprung up in the surrounding area. The Gila Farmers' Market takes place on Tuesdays, 4:00 to 7:00 at 414 Hwy 211, next to the Valley Market in Gila. The Bayard Farmers' Market occurs on Wednesday 3:00 to 6:00 across from the Post Office on Central Avenue in Bayard. The Mimbres Farmers' Market happens on Thursdays, 4:30 to 6:30 at the Senior Center in San Lorenzo, in the Mimbres Valley.
Purchasing food in local Farmers' Markets is a great way to help support local agriculture, meet the people who grow your food, and go away with some tasty treats!
