This, and the image below are but 2 aerial images of the Gila River and watershed being shown in a pop-up art display during the Gila River Festival this weekend through Sunday. See it at 111 E College in the old Curious Kumquat building from 11am to 5 pm during the River Festival and again during the Southwest Festival of the Written Word (Sept 29-Oct 1).
In the weeks leading up to the Festival the "Gila Collective" was formed and their first showing (pop-up) was in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Art Institute Water Rights Residency then it brought to Silver City for an opening August 16th.
The aerial images are put together by Peter Bill as a looping slide show revealing a million years of evolution with an animation by Kate Brown of Mimbres showing the fauna throughout the years. Gaze into a giant olla cauldron created by Kate Brown of Mimbres River mud to wiff the smells of the local flora and listen to the river speak.
Also available are perfumes made locally from Gila plants by Stephen Dirks of Brooklyn, NY.
