"I wanted to go out and join them just to beat up a few of them" said the man sitting at a table inside Watts Hall. Tom, Mike and I had entered the building and stopped at the table to ask the WNMU cop, chatting with the mean one, directions to Rep Pierce's staffers who were meeting with people. As we made our way back was remembering last weeks demonstration at Pierce's Las Cruces office during a "speak with the staff day" and the staffers locked the doors.

When we got to the Chamber office we were greeted by Chamber Exec Scott Terry who invited us in and explained the procedure; I said that there were 120 people outside who would like to speak to the staffer(s) all at the same time at which point Scott politely repeated that only 2 or 3 can go in at a time and that if everybody came in he would shorten the normal 10 to 15 minutes so everybody had a turn. Back on the street Tom and Mike went through the crown and let people know they could go in and speak with a staffer; only a few went in.

Issues ran the gambit from support of the Affordable Care Act to fair treatment of immigrants and not dividing people with walls. Support from cars driving by was huge with only a few angry gestures. The crowd was split into 2 groups due space constraints on the sidewalk next to Silver Heights and when the crown there got too large it expanded onto the triangle dirt area beyond where the sidewalk ended. On the Realtors behalf 2 patrolmen came and politely instructed that the group had to stay on the sidewalk and off the privately owned dirt area, the group was polite right back and stayed on the sidewalk. In the photo you can see the abrupt end of the public sidewalk and private land begins.

The demonstrators began arriving about 12:30 and about 2pm Dr Fred Fox MD emerged from his talk with a staffer and told the crowd that his subject was the Affordable Care Act and how important it is, especially to the medically underserved residents of SW New Mexico which has a 41% low income rate; he encouraged the crown to continue to speak out.

Dr Fox, according to his press packet is part of a group called "Democracy Advocates: local individuals advocating for democratic solutions to community problems".

The lady who was in charge of and one of the organizers for the demonstration is from The Silver City Integrals (correction: Indivisible).

Once a month a staffer or 2 from Pierce's office are in town and available to talk with and always at the republican stronghold the (Brown) Chamber of Commerce.

Thanks for covering this event! A couple of corrections: we were not attempting to speak with the staffers. Our gathering and our signs were the message we were conveying. And the organizer is with Silver City Indivisible.

Thanks for the correction on the name of the group, perhaps you can write some about them. As for my conversation with Scott Terry it was simply a test, I wanted to get a feel for how the attitude was at the Chamber as I had already encountered a hateful attitude in the lobby towards people outside practicing democracy and exercising their constitution rights.
