4:30 AM Saturday morning SCFD Fire Marshall Lambert arrived on scene to the fire gutted mobile home in Shady Grove as firemen were mopping up and 3 people were being transported to hospital where one, with life threatening burns, would be air lifted to a Phoenix Arizona burn center.

After a short investigation FM Lambert found probable cause to suspect arson and called, as required, the NM State Arson Inspector on-call who lives near Santa Fe. When he answered the phone the state inspector had only had 2 hours sleep since his lat investigation so they agreed he could sleep 2 more hours before beginning the 5 or 7 hour drive. At about 1:00 pm I went by to offer to bring Lambert coffee and lunch but the department was one its way with provisions.

5:20 pm I again stop by and the Lambert and the state inspector were fully engaged in their investigation and the state inspector told me this: The average time it takes for a fire to fully collapse a mobile home is 18 to 20 minutes so the fact that this mobile hame had so much structure still standing was a tribute to the fast and efficient response by the fire department. He further praised to SCFD for their minimal impact on the scene that preserved evidence and made his job easier and more accurate.

The Principal Of Continuous Occupation: When the Fire Marshall determines there is possible foul play and calls the state inspector he must then continue the occupation of that location until the investigation by the state is compete (as do police on a crime a scene). If Lambert had left, even for coffee or a piss, a search warrant issued by a judge needing probable cause as established by the state inspector, not allowed on-scene, would have to be obtained.
