It's been a week since 30 community members turned out on Earth Day to plant 16 fruit trees, 50 native wild plants and 50 clumps of edible seed native grasses. As work continued throughout the week it's looking more like a park than a traditional orchard. As outlined in my previous article (HERE) this orchard park features a massive water diversion/catchment system designed to water the trees 9 months a year.

The new orchard park is located behind the Office of Sustainability and accessed from either 11th St or the parking lot on 12th St across from Gough Park and has walking paths, soon to be graveled.

Earth Day 2016. Among the trees I looked at were Peach, Cherry and Apricots but there may be others.

The 3 dry months, April, May and June, the orchard park will be watered by 2 automatic drip systems, now fully installed and operational. One system waters only the trees and the other waters the plants.

The Sacaton Grass is planted in the catchment and watered until established, by the drip system. Watch for this to fill in to a huge and beautiful bunch, also called Bunch Grass and bird begin to mover it around Town.

Work is expected to continue another week with gravel placed on the paths and mulch around trees, plants and grasses.

Here, the main builders, the Wellness Coalition YCC crew, under the direction of project manager Asher Gelbart from Stream Dynamics, measure the relative levels between the curb cut, zuni bowl and the spillway into the large catchment using a homemade water level transit. The device consists of a bucket of water, clear tubing, a stick and measuring tape.
