Earth Day, Saturday April 23 the public is invited to assist from noon to 2pm in the planting of 15 fruit trees in the new "Community Orchard". If you would like to win a fruit tree and/or have a vote on what trees are planted, stop by the Neighborhood Orchards Project booth in Gough Park from 10 am to noon Saturday. Whats even more interesting and progressive is that the Orchard is partnered with a water diversion/catchment project that will water the trees 9 months out the year.

Image
This vacant lot, once an RV Park, sits between the back of the Office of Sustainability and the driveway into the Washington Federal drive through banking from 11th street. The trees and an assortment of native plants will be watered from 6 Catchment Ponds that are calculated to catch and hold 40,000 gallons of water after a 2 inch rain or 300,000 gallons per year at an average of 16 inches per year rainfall. All this water, normally flowing into the sewer comes from the long driveway into the bank, the roof of the Office of Sustainability and half of the parking lot across 12th street from Gough Park.

A drip irrigation, supplied by the Town of Silver City will water the trees during the 3 dry months, April, May and June for about $50 per year.

About the photos: The bench, and others like it, in the top pict is constructed from slabs of concrete left from the old RV Park. The second photo shows the length of the lot and the driveway in the top right and a slab to the left that will be dug up and turned into a bench. There are 3 curb cuts along the driveway that will channel water from the driveway into the 6 catchment ponds as shown in the 3rd photo. A 4th curb cut will bring water from 11th street.

About the funding: The trees are supplied through the Neighborhood Orchards Project from funding from NM State Forestry, Grant County United Way and Wells Fargo Foundation. The water catchment project is funded through a grant from the NMED and is part of the 80 diversion projects partnership between Stream Dynamics and the Town of Silver City.
