Three more Water Diversion/Catchments were completed on November 11 at the corner of 6th and E Street. This brings to 12 the number completed under the NMED Watershed Restoration Grant with 68 more to go. Though the grant money can only be used on Town Right-of-way, a private owner of adjacent land can enter into a partnership of sorts and pay the cost to have the project extend onto that private land; this project is the second example.

The catchment above is on E St and diverts water as it heads for Kelly and into downtown. The visible curb cut is the inlet with the outlet curb cut at the far end where the shadow of a tree is.

Just around the corner are the other 2 catch basins divided by a walkway to the street. As shown below these basins were concrete that had to be torn up without disturbing the sidewalk or curbs.

If you have ideas for other pubic land water diversion/catchment contact Van Clothier of Stream Dynamics, (575) 590-0549 or van@streamdynamics.us. If Van or Claire Catlett knock on your door, as they are required to do, to explain about a project proposed next to your home/land take the opportunity to explore some kind of tie-in onto your land.

Image
In this situation when the landowners were approached about a modest plan they had bigger ideas already formulated and agreed to chip-in for the greater cost for the 3 catchment and 6 curb cuts plus an overflow that fed their native garden.

Asher Gelbart has really fine tuned his curb cutting skills. A different shape was cut to control out flow.

Photo credits: the last 2 photos were taken by Project Manager Claire Catlett, the middle 2 by Sharon Bookwalter, adjacent land owner with her husband Dean and the first 2 photos are mine, crow.
